FAQ

Good questions to ask before you send anything

Is this tax advice?

No. SecureSlip prepares supporting documentation for your medical expense claim: a reconciled, numbered schedule and cover letter. It's general information, not a professional opinion on your situation. For advice, speak to a registered tax practitioner.

Do you submit my return to SARS?

No, unless we agree that with you separately, in writing. You check and approve the final pack, then you or your own tax practitioner file it.

Where does my data go while it's being processed?

Documents are read by private, on-device AI. They don't get uploaded to a third-party cloud AI service to get your claim put together. You sign a mandate and POPIA consent before anything is processed, and at the end of the season you choose whether we delete your data or archive it.

What if I'm missing some documents?

A running checklist shows what's still outstanding: a missing certificate month, an unmatched payment, a gap in a bank statement. We chase what's missing before anything gets packaged, rather than guessing around it.

How much does it cost?

The fees are published. Triage is R450 and is credited in full against any pack fee if you go ahead. A pack is R1,750 for up to about 75 documents with one medical scheme, R2,950 for 75-200 documents or two schemes or accounts, and from R4,500 for 200-plus documents, multiple schemes or bank accounts, multi-year corrections and estates. It's one fee per taxpayer per tax year, agreed upfront and invoiced only after you approve your pack. See the pricing page for what sits in each tier. SARS does not regard contingency fees as an acceptable way to charge for tax-return work, and neither do we.

I have gap cover. Does that change my claim?

Yes, and we need that statement too. SARS only allows medical expenses you couldn't recover from anywhere else. If your gap insurer (Sanlam Gap, Turnberry, Stratum, Discovery Gap, Kaelo or similar) paid you back for any expense, that amount must be subtracted from your claim. That is why your gap policy's annual claims statement is part of a correct pack. While we're in there, we also flag anything you can still claim from your gap policy before its submission window closes: recovering 100% from your insurer beats a 25% to 33.3% tax credit every time.

Will this get me a refund?

Not on its own. The medical tax credits reduce the income tax you owe for the year. If the credit is bigger than the tax you actually paid, the difference is lost: it can't create a refund larger than your tax paid, and it can't be carried to next year. If your taxable income is below the tax threshold, this claim is worth R0 to you, and we'll tell you that at triage, before you spend anything. Whether a credit becomes a refund depends on your PAYE and the rest of your return.

Do I have to scan everything myself?

Most clients do, and it's quicker than it sounds: scan or photograph as you gather, and download bank statements as PDFs from your banking app. Scans read best; clear, flat photos in good light usually work, and anything we can't read comes back to you on a checklist rather than getting lost. If you'd rather not touch a scanner at all, choose the paper intake add-on on our pricing page: insured courier both ways, we do all the scanning, and your originals come back with your pack.

Can I still use my own tax practitioner?

Yes. The pack is built to hand to any tax practitioner, or to file yourself. You're not locked into anything.

What documents do I need to send?

Every medical invoice and receipt for the tax year, your medical scheme's tax certificate(s) and claims extract, bank and credit-card statements covering the full year, your gap cover annual claims statement if you have gap cover, and proof of relationship if you're claiming for a spouse or dependant. Our blog has a full checklist.

Why not just ask my accountant?

Most of this work isn't tax judgement. It's matching a year of receipts against bank payments and a scheme certificate, line by line, without missing or double-counting anything. That's the slow part SecureSlip automates and checks. Your accountant (or ours) still makes the tax calls.
